Livestock Waterers - Frequently Asked Questions
How does a J&D Poly Livestock Waterer Work?

When the water level within the waterer reaches a certain level, a valve is triggered causing the waterer to automatically fill up with water from a pressurized water line. When the water reaches the preset water level, the valve closes to stop the flow of water. When animals drink from the waterer they are causing the valve to open and to start the refilling process.

What type of material are the J&D Poly Livestock Waterers made from?

They are made from strong polyethylene material formed in a double wall configuration which is FDA and HPB approved, food grade.

Why are the corners rounded and tapered on the J&D Poly Livestock Waterers?

All corners are rounded and tapered on the units so the basin will not collect dirt or manure in the corners and for the safety of livestock and employees.

On the J&D Poly Livestock Waterers, why is the float and valve located in the center of the unit?

The float and value are located in the center of the unit to leave the full trough open for livestock accessibility.

Is every J&D Poly Livestock Waterers insulated?

Yes. Each waterer is insulated with a foaming material that is filled in between the spaces of the polyethylene double wall configuration.

Is the water level adjustable on my J&D Poly Livestock Waterer?

Yes. The water level is easily adjustable on your J&D Poly Livestock Waterer using the float operated valve.

How do I properly install my J&D Poly Livestock Waterer?

Complete installation instructions for your unit can be downloaded here. J&D recommends the following basic guidelines:
• Place unit on a concrete pad to help with drainage and to prevent a mud hole from forming.
• Caulk or weather strip the base of the waterer to the concrete pad. This helps with wind penetration.
• Make sure electrical units are installed by a qualified electrician. A properly grounded receptacle unit acceptable for outdoor use will need to be installed and protected from the weather.
• A qualified plumber should bury the water supply line below the ground freeze line.
• Use an Insulated Earth Tube to help prevent freezing in cold climates.

Can the J&D Poly Livestock Tip Tanks be mounted on the floor or wall?

Yes. The J&D Livestock Tip Tanks can be easily mounted on both the floor and wall using the included mounting bracket.

How do I protect my animals from stray voltage when drinking from the J&D Poly Livestock Waterers?

All J&D Livestock Waterers (except Tip Tanks) have a stainless steel probe that extends into the water with ground wire to help prevent stray voltage.

How do I prevent my J&D Poly Livestock Waterer from tipping over?

All J&D Poly Livestock Waterers come with bolt down locations for easy mounting.

Are submersible heaters available on the J&D Poly Livestock Waterers?

Yes. A submersible heater can be ordered separately in 250 or 550 Watt for all J&D Poly Livestock Waterers.

How can I prevent freeze up of my J&D Poly Livestock Waterer in the winter months?

There are many things you can do to make sure your J&D Poly Livestock Waterer is operating properly in the cold winter months:
• Protect your unit from wind and snow. This will help reduce your energy costs as well as help prevent freeze ups. Don't forget to keep it in a location that your animals can easily access.
• In order to keep the water moving in the unit, there must be a minimum number of animals drinking from the waterer. The number of animals depends on the size of the waterer. Remember that the animals that drink from the waterer triggers the valve to allow water exchange.
• Clean and maintain your unit regularly. Drippings from the animals' mouths can cause ice build-up.
• Use an insulated earth tube.

What is an insulated earth tube and why should I use it on my J&D Poly Livestock Waterer?

An earth tube is located under the ground around the water supply line. It is highly recommended for cold climates. You many need more than one depending on the depth. This tube allows the movement of air that has been warmed by the geothermal heat around the water supply line to keep it from freezing. The warm air is generated from the ground below the frost line.

Do I have to use an Insulated Earth Tube to prevent my J&D Poly Livestock Waterer from freezing?

No, but it is highly recommended to use the Insulated Earth Tube in cold climates.

Why use a J&D Poly Livestock Waterer over a Stock Tank or Buckets?

Using a J&D Poly Livestock Waterer provides fresh and clean water to your livestock 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. The automatic water refill and low daily maintenance is a time saver for you and your employees. The constant refreshing of the water supply reduces algae growth and eliminates stagnant water to help prevent diseases like West Nile Virus. J&D Poly Livestock Waterers will not crack or rust in extreme weather conditions.

Why is the capacity on your Livestock Waterers less than others I've seen?

Actually, a tank that is more shallow equals fresher water. The rate at which the water is replaced is much faster so that water does not sit for extended periods without being refreshed.

What warranty does J&D provide on the J&D Poly Livestock Waterers?

J&D Manufacturing offers a 5 (five) year warranty on all Poly Livestock Waterers. This warranty covers defects in the material or workmanship. The warranty is limited to the value of the defective part and does not include any freight charges, loss of production and/or changes in operation. It does not cover damage due to careless machine handling and neglect. We also offer a 1 (one) year warranty on the float and valve, electrical heating pad, thermostat, and submersible heater. Note: To ensure the life of your electric livestock waterer, be sure that the waterer is drained and shut off when not in use.

How do I clean my J&D Poly Livestock Waterer?

On the Energy Free and some of the Electric units, cleaning is as easy as shutting off the water supply, pulling the drain plug so the water can drain out easily and quickly and then wiping clean. On the tip tanks, just tip the tank to empty the water and wipe clean.
