that increased cow comfort yields higher milk production levels. We all know
that for ourselves, a good sleep on a nice bed better prepares us for a more

healthier environment and you start to put together an environment where
your cows feel better, have fewer injuries, and are healthier which leads
naturally to increased milk production. There are many levels of added
comfort for the bedding area, from cow mats to cow mattress systems that

 needed for the cow to lay and stand
easily and injury free but can also offer a less obstructive infrastructure
that allows for increased air circulation among the animals.
What more can you do? Reduce heat stress and provide fresher air at all
times with properly designed air circulation systems, ventilation systems,
curtain systems, and free stall systems. Cool cows will tend to stay hungrier
and eat more feed and you guessed it, produce more milk. Take advantage of
natural ventilation patterns and then supplement that with an air
circulation or ventilation system designed for your installation. Roll up
curtain systems can also enhance your barn's natural ventilation
capabilities. To further reduce heat stress, add on misting or sprinkling
systems that take advantage of evaporative cooling properties and cool the
air even further.
Providing enough water to your herd also effects cow comfort. Having enough
water troughs or dump tanks to service your animals as well as locating them
in appropriate places will improve production levels. Take advantage of time
saving features of some waterers such as anti-freeze valves and tank
heaters.
Other places to add a little cushion are the walk ways, holding areas and
milking parlor. Runway mats come in various widths and thicknesses. Choose
rolled rubber mats for long stretches with out any seams. Interlock mats
piece together like jig saw puzzles.
While neither a comprehensive nor exclusive list of methods to maximize your
cost/cow ratio, there may be one or many areas that you may be able to
